Research Triangle Park, N.C. - Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) has begun offering a new program designed to assure a trip home. The “Emergency Ride Home” program will eliminate the worry and hassle for the commuter that uses transportation alternatives and needs a ride home due to an emergency.
“We think this is a great way to get drivers out of their cars,” said TTA Director of Commuter Resources John Tallmadge. “Those who don’t drive appreciate the peace of mind that comes with knowing that they can get home if they have to. The ‘Emergency Ride Home’ program is being made possible in part through the leadership of the City of Durham and Durham County’s Commute Trip Reduction Program.” The program promotes a series of strategies or actions, typically used during the peak travel hours to increase the use of transportation alternatives to driving such as walking, cycling, public transit and vanpooling or carpooling.
To be able to use the “Emergency Ride Home” program:
- An individual’s employer must be registered with the program for he or she to be eligible to continue use of the program beyond one emergency ride hom
-
Employees must be pre-registered and work in Durham, Orange or Wake counties
-
The commuter must be a full time or permanent part-time employee
-
An alternative mode (bus, vanpool, carpool, bike, walking or running ) must be used on the day the ride is needed
- Participants must be 21 years old or over
Examples of emergencies include unscheduled overtime work, an immediate family member suffering from an illness or severe crisis, or a ridesharing driver who has to stay later or leave earlier than anticipated.
Participants must register with TTA through Customer Service at 549-9999 or through www.rideTTA.org. After registering, TTA will send more details and a voucher with the name and number of a service provider that can be used for an emergency trip home.
