Research Triangle Park, N.C. – At Durham’s Greyhound/Carolina Trailways terminal, Betty Jones rattles off the name of towns as though they were her children. As the towns are called one by one, waiting passengers hear where the next bus is headed.
This spring, Greyhound/Carolina Trailways moved to 412 W. Chapel Hill Street, in a building owned by the Triangle Transit Authority. TTA bought the building and land for future transit use and is currently leasing the location to Greyhound/Carolina Trailways.
“It’s a great fit,” said TTA General Manager David King. “This arrangement gives the region a great multi-modal opportunity. Durham-area residents have access to the terminal and those getting off a bus can use local transportation. We are pleased to partner with Greyhound/Carolina Trailways.”
The building, a former utility payment center, has been repainted and has a comfortable waiting area and vending center. There is also an area where riders can watch television while waiting for the next bus. An outside canopy provides some shelter while passengers are getting on and off buses.
As the local Greyhound/Carolina Trailways facilities manager, Betty Jones says the lease arrangement with TTA has provided Durham with a great location that has garnered compliments from travelers. “People from Florida, Virginia and the West Coast tell me it’s one of the best terminals on the East Coast and to hear that from them is wonderful,” Jones said.
TTA routes that serve the Durham area are within a two-minute walk from the location: 402, 403, 412, 413, and the 600 Durham-Raleigh Express. The 650 Raleigh-Durham express also serves the area near terminal and the Amtrak station in Durham is located less than a block east of the Greyhound/Carolina Trailways station on W. Chapel Hill St.
TTA is a regional public transportation provider, offering a wide variety of transit and vanpool services to North Carolina's Triangle Region and outlying counties. Regional bus and shuttle service is available to Apex, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Garner, Hillsborough, RDU International Airport, Research Triangle Park and Raleigh.
