Research Triangle Park, N.C. - Beginning Thursday, Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) buses and shuttles will begin a week-long tribute to Rosa Parks.
Fifty years ago, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. December 1, 2005, marks the 50th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ act of defiance that changed the course of history. Four days later, in response to Ms. Parks’ arrest, a year-long bus boycott began and propelled Parks to prominence as the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement."
To pay tribute, TTA is honoring Rosa Parks from December 1 through December 7 by placing special posters on each bus and shuttle along with brochures explaining the significance that public transportation and Rosa Parks played in the American civil rights movement.
In announcing the week-long tribute, TTA General Manager John Claflin said, “Rosa Parks’ quiet strength and courage inspired us all and will continue to inspire future generations. Equality and access are principles that TTA firmly embraces as we serve our riders each and every day.”
