Improve Route 105 to Provide Direct Midday Service to Hillsborough St.
Which Areas of the Triangle are served by Route 105EX and Route 151?
Route 105EX provides an express connection between RTP and Raleigh's Moore Square Station during the midday and the evening. Route 151 provides a connection from Moore Square to Hillsborough Street, and is timed to meet the arrival of the 105EX in Raleigh.
Why Propose this Change?
Route 105EX travels as an express between Moore Square in downtown Raleigh and the RTP Bus Transfer Center. Passengers wishing to go to Hillsborough St must ride PAST Hillsborough St to Moore Square, then transfer and ride the 151 back in the direction they came from. Midday access to NCSU and other Hillsborough St destinations is made very difficult and time-consuming by this current arrangement.
By moving the transfer point from Moore Square to the Blue Ridge Rd Park-and-Ride, we will speed up the trips of those going to Hillsborough St while imposing only a short delay on those traveling to Moore Square.
What did the public say?
Most of the comment received about this proposal was received through face-to-face interviews with TTA staff on midday 105EX and 151 buses. Opinions on the 105EX were split almost 50/50 between keeping the service as it is or providing direct access to Hillsborough Street without a transfer at Moore Square.
151 riders were generally supportive of the change as it would allow them to travel to RTP without a transfer at Moore Square.
TTA Responds: In addition to the transfer frustration voiced by some customers, the 105EX has been pressed for time and sometimes struggles to make connections on bad weather days because there is very little padding in the schedule. With most of the 151 passengers in support of the change and half of the 105EX customers supportive, TTA approved the change, which will make the service much more similar to the morning/afternoon service between Raleigh and RTP.
The overall travel time from Moore Square to RTP will be longer than the current 105EX, but TTA believes the new arrangement will provide greater convenience to a larger number of passengers.
