Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What state government employees are eligible to ride TTA (and Capital Area Transit) fare free?
A: Click Here to view the list of state government agencies who are eligible to ride for free.
Q: What state government employees are NOT eligible to ride fare free?
A: Click Here to view the list of agencies who are NOT eligible to ride for free.
Q: Why are state university employees not eligible to ride for free?
A: University employees are not eligible because they were not covered in the contract that TTA signed with the NC state government. We do, however, have agreements with UNC/UNC Hospital and NC State University at this time. Please see our list of Discounted Pass Programs for information about the free rides available for these employees.
Q: Where can I obtain my GoPass?
A: If you are eligible to receive the GoPass, then you can obtain the pass from your agency's parking coordinator. Click Here to View the List of Parking Coordinators (PDF File).
Q: Does TTA or CAT offer express routes?
A: Yes. TTA offers two express routes in the Triangle. One route operates between Chapel Hill and Raleigh, and the other route operates between Durham and Raleigh. You can ride either of these routes for FREE with your GoPass.
Q: What if I don't live on a bus route?
A: Many commuters do not live along CAT or TTA routes. Both transit systems have park-and-ride locations throughout the Triangle area so commuters can access public transit. View the list of park-and-ride lots for TTA & CAT.
State government employees are also eligible to receive a $15 monthly subsidy if they ride on or drive a Vanpool. You can also consider carpooling with co-workers or friends. Click Here to search for vanpools and potential carpool partners online, in a matter of seconds!
Q: Can I ride the buses for purposes that are not work related?
A: Yes. The GoPass, while designed for travel between home and work, does not limit usage. Any eligible state government employee can ride CAT or TTA buses anytime with their GoPass (except for the State Fair and University events).
Q: Why switch from showing my state ID badge to using the GoPass?
A: The electronic fare boxes used on the buses capture information (i.e. passenger boarding locations and times) that allow CAT and TTA to better plan bus service.
Q: What happens if I leave state government?
A: When a state government employee leaves, the ID badge along with the GoPass is returned to the employer.
